Welcome to the South African arm of the MEPA site. The SMART Centre is a University of KwaZulu-Natal project based at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) in Durban. A satellite centre operates at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. Dr Christian Kampik is the accredited MEPA course instructor.
The centre provides state of the art simulation based training facilities to Medical, Nursing and Allied Healthcare professionals as well as undergraduate students in the MBChB curriculum.
The SMART centre contains various simulators, including five METI high fidelity human patient simulators and a host of Laerdal equipment providing training on a range of medical areas. This state of the art centre is rapidly changing the way we train medical personnel.
Our first MEPA course on the 8th November 2013 was an enormous success. This was held as part of the PACSA – Paediatric Anaesthesia Congress of South Africa. This was followed by a very successful course(Trainee MEPA) on the 31st May 2014.
Our subsequent trainee course is scheduled for 15th November 2014. A MEPA FC Course is scheduled for 20th March 2015 as one of the Workshops for the SASA2015 Congress(South African Society of Anaesthesiologists).
